This book is an essential career guide aiming to help solve the career gap for AAPI and how allies can support.

Our cultural upbringing powerfully impacts how we navigate our lives and careers. In The Visibility Mindset: How Asian American Leaders Create Opportunities and Push Past Barriers, Chao and Lam deliver an engaging and enlightening treatment of how Asian American professional leaders have powered through the obstacles in their way.

The book explores a variety of myths, stereotypes, and problems faced by Asian American professionals—including the bamboo ceiling and the model minority myth—and how they’ve operated to exclude Asians from the ranks of leadership for decades. It empowers you to overcome many of these issues and walks you through how to elevate your career as you work to open doors that may otherwise remain closed to you.

The Visibility Mindset offers straightforward exercises and strategies, alongside many real-life leadership examples from various industries, to help you navigate the most common pitfalls and challenges faced by Asian American leaders as they move forward in their careers. The book explores how to work with others effectively and how to handle microaggressions, how to leverage the power of networking, and how to manage and mentor others while seeking out mentorship for yourself.

You’ll also discover how to integrate leading diversity, equity, and inclusion practices into your leadership and development progression.

It’s Time for A Change

“Asian-Americans are the least likely group to be promoted to managers in America.”

— Harvard Business Review

Only 16% of Asian men and 20% of Asian women said they felt fully included at work. These percentages were below the third-lowest group, Black women, at 22%, according to a Bain survey of 10,000 individuals across industries and demographic backgrounds in seven countries and at all levels of seniority.

- USA Today

McKinsey’s Women in the Workplace study surveyed more than 400 large organizations across the United States in 2021 and found that Asian Americans account for 9 percent of senior vice presidents but just 5 percent of promotions from senior vice president to the C-suite. Asian American women make up less than 1 percent of these promotions.

- Mckinsey & Company Report

“90% of AAPI professionals had experienced the limiting force of the bamboo ceiling and faced discrimination in their careers.

- Forbes
